Is the highway between Cali Airport and Buenaventura, Colombia safe for American tourists?

I have received conflicting info re driving from Cali to Buenaventura. Does anyone know if the highway is safe for an American to travel? Would I be better taking a taxi or a public bus? Also how about the city of Buenaventura - is it safe? Can I walk around at night? Is one part of Buenaventura better / safer than other parts? Are there any Internet Cafes?
