Why does everyone suddenly care about Haiti...is it superficial or real?

We all have known it's the poorest nation in this hemisphere, murder capital, with some of the highest AIDS infection rates, and that people were eating mud pies because they were starving...is it just a news story or humanitarian issue to add to a politicians bag of tricks?
